  • More tips for planning your Tasmania road trip

This 3 week Tasmania itinerary shows you exactly how to plan your Tassie holiday – and if you have more time available you can easily extend it to a 30 day itinerary, 4 weeks, or even longer.

For every single day of your road trip I have used my experience as a local Tasmanian to show you:

  • the best activities for both your morning and afternoon (including how much time to allow for each);
  • my favourite dining options for breakfast, lunch and dinner (I’m a huge foodie, so I’m speaking from experience); and
  • the best places to stay in each region to put your feet up and relax for the night, covering B&Bs, free and low-cost campsites, caravan parks and more!

All you need to do is choose the activities that appeal to your interests and style of travel, get your vehicle organised, and either book your accommodation or plan your nightly campsites – it’s that easy.

How to create your ideal itinerary

For each morning and afternoon you will see I’ve listed plenty of options for things to see and do. I have done this deliberately, because everyone has different preferences in what they like to do while on holiday. You might love a bushwalk, while someone else might prefer a museum.

You won’t have time to do everything on the list, so use my recommended durations to pick and choose the ones that you will enjoy most and that also fit the time available.

This itinerary has been written a little bit differently to my other itineraries on the website. It starts in Devonport, because I know that so many of you like to catch the ferry to Tasmania with your own vehicle, and it also takes you anti-clockwise around Tasmania.

It is completely up to you though!

If you are flying into Hobart then simply start the itinerary from Day 10. And if you prefer to go clockwise then all you need to do is follow the itinerary in reverse.

Keep in mind that you will need to allow for travel time each day, depending on which activities you choose to include in your itinerary. If you aren’t sure about this or have any other questions, please feel free to ask our wonderful community of road trippers and local Tasmanians over in the Lap of Tasmania Facebook Group.

Before we get into the detail, here is a quick overview showing you how this 3-week itinerary is structured. As you can see, I’ve allocated 2 nights in most regions. Hobart and Bicheno get 3 nights each because they are fantastic ‘hubs’ for exploring their surrounding regions.

If you can squeeze an extra day into your itinerary, then I would definitely do both!

A full day is needed to see the best bits of the Tarkine Loop. If that’s your preference then prepare a picnic lunch using ingredients from Providore 24 (Stanley) and Tarkine Fresh Oysters (Smithton), and plan your day around these activities:

  • Trowutta Arch (0.5 hr)
  • Milkshake Hills Lookout + Forest Walk (1-1.5hrs) – Good lunch facilities here

Day 5: Explore Cradle Mountain

Fresh alpine air and an ever-changing landscape from mountains, to forests, lakes and everything in between… this is one epic day of exploration!

If you enjoy bushwalking then I strongly recommend that loop walk from Ronny Creek to crater Lake, Marion’s Lookout and down to Dove Lake via the Wombat Pools – especially during autumn when the fagus leaves all turn golden orange and red.

If you aren’t up for a long walk, the short trail to Pencil Pine and Knyvet Falls is an absolute stunner and massive reward for minimal effort. It starts right out front of Cradle Mountain Lodge and is very easy.

Day 6: Cradle Mountain to Strahan

They don’t call them the ‘West Coast Wilds’ for nothing!

Dense, lush rainforest, tannin-stained rivers, and epic rainfall during winter – it’s incredible to think about what it must have been like for the indigenous palawa and old miners and loggers who called this inhospitable region home back in the day.

Breakfast

  • Tracks on Point (Strahan) – OR – The Coffee Shack (Strahan)

Morning activities

If it was me, I would be making a Gordon River Cruise your #1 priority while exploring the West Coast, followed up by an evening of laughter watching Australia’s longest running play, The Ship That Never Was. It’s the ultimate combo.

The West Coast Wilderness Railway is a great alternative, but I suggest catching the train from Queenstown, as the views and all-round experience are better than the option leaving from Strahan.

  • Gordon River cruise with World Heritage Cruises (9am – 3pm) – Use LAPOFTAS for 10% OFF !
  • West Coast Wilderness Railway
  • RoamWild 4WD Tour (half or full day)

Where to stay for Mt Field and the Derwent Valley

For me, the Derwent Valley is one of Tasmania’s most special places and you could easily spend 3 or 4 nights in the region.

I recommend basing yourself in either Fentonbury at Hamlet Downs (click here for my review) or right next to the national park at Mt Field Retreat (click here for my review), using it as a base to visit Mt Field, and for a day trip out to Maydena, Lake Pedder, and Gordon Dam.

Both Hamlet Downs and Mt Field Retreat are big supporters of our community, providing Lappers with special offers when you stay with them! Click through the links above for more info.

Day 9: Explore Mt Field – OR – Lake Pedder & Gordon Dam

For me, I’d be spending a full day exploring the lower and upper regions of Mt Field NP. I’ve travelled the world doing a lot of hiking, and there aren’t many places that come close to the natural beauty of this special park.

For an easier day on the road I also show you how to plan a day-trip out to Lake Pedder and Gordon Dam.

Whichever option you choose you’ll have a great day out!

Visiting two or more parks while in Tasmania? The 2-month Holiday Pass is the best value for most visitors, or the Annual Pass for concession holders.

Day 11: Explore Hobart

You could easily spend a few days exploring everything Hobart has to offer, and you could easily substitute the Bruny Island day-trip (Day 12) with another day in Hobart if you felt like it – especially if you want to visit MONA and spend more than half a day there.

My favourites in Hobart include Mt Wellington, a walk through Salamanca and along the waterfront, and a ‘Posh Pit’ ferry trip to MONA. For more tips and advice, you’ll love my Hobart Day-Trip Planner.

Day 12: Bruny Island Day Trip

Day 15: Dover to Port Arthur (via Richmond)

Note: This is a fairly busy day, with plenty of things to see and do along the way. Keep an eye on the time, as you don’t want to be arriving in Port Arthur after dark if you can help it due to native animals on the roads.

If you want more time in Richmond, don’t bother driving there via Cygnet and Woodbridge (as recommended below). Instead, drive direct from Dover to Hobart via the Channel Highway, and then out to Richmond. This frees up an extra couple of hours for you to explore Richmond, or to have a more relaxing drive over to the Tasman Peninsula in the afternoon.

Day 17: Port Arthur to Bicheno

When creating this itinerary I was in two minds as to how I should construct your East Coast activities and accommodation…

On one hand, Freycinet and ‘The Hazards’ ae a must-visit. On the other, we have the absolutely iconic red rocks and pristine sands of Bay of Fires.

This is where Tassie’s small size comes in handy. I’ve chosen Bicheno as your base, because it splits the East Coast in half, making it easy to do day trips south and north. I figure you may prefer this instead of unpacking/packing multiple times in Coles Bay (Freycinet) and Binalong Bay (Bay of Fires).

Bicheno also has more facilities and better shopping and dining options, but of course, there’s nothing stopping you from doing it your own way if you prefer to stay as close as possible to Freycinet or Bay of Fires.

Road Warning

To get from Port Arthur to Orford, Google Maps will probably try and tell you to go via Wielangta Road. This road is unsealed and often in poor condition, and is unsuitable for 2WD vehicles. Instead, take the A9 highway to Sorell, before continuing on the A3 to Orford and the East Coast.

A trip to the Bay of Fires is essential for any Tasmanian road trip.

But at the same time, I don’t feel you need to spend multiple nights/days there to get what’s all about.

Personally, I feel that a day trip is heaps of time to see its amazing beaches and to capture dozens of breathtaking photos. Keep reading to learn how to make it happen!

Travellers often zoom through Tasmania’s north east region without stopping, but they are missing out big time!

The tiny towns of Pyengana, Derby, and Weldborough are rich in ‘Tin Dragon’ history and natural beauty, and are well worth a half-day or longer on your way through to Launceston.

Day 21: Explore Launceston

Tassie’s second largest city, Launceston has plenty to keep you busy, and that’s before you extend your trip north up the Tamar Valley, or south to historic Evandale.

A lot of visitors (and locals!) don’t realise that Launceston is actually a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, and you’ll find plenty of amazing dining options for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks!

As this is your last day, don’t forget to allow enough time at the end of the day to either drive across to Devonport to get the ferry (1 hr drive), or to travel to Launceston Airport with enough time check-in and catch your flight. If you’ve got a rental vehicle you’ll also need to allow time to return the keys and possibly get a taxi or Uber.
