Waterfalls Cafe & Gallery

Gifts and Souvenirs | Eating Out | Derwent Valley

Standing on soft, tannin-stained soil, surrounded by vibrant mosses, ferns and fungi – the sound of waterfalls and currawongs in your ears – a day of exploration in Mt Field National Park is like stepping back to prehistoric times.

Russell Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and the magical Tarn Shelf are all very popular destinations for Tassie road trippers… but nestled at the foot of this stunning national park is one of Tasmania’s best little hidden gems – Waterfalls Cafe and Gallery!

Whether it’s snowing,  blue skies, or something in between, Rachel and the team will brighten up your day with their warm, friendly service and genuine passion for showcasing this iconic Tasmanian destination.

Walking and hiking trails criss-cross the park, and there is nothing better at the end of your stroll through the rainforest than to step out of the crisp alpine air and into the cosy, inviting cafe for a hot drink or a light meal.

Waterfalls Cafe and Gallery is also one of the best places in Tasmania to browse locally made handicrafts, artworks, and stunning wilderness photography. These Tassie-made gifts are the perfect souvenir to take back home – whether it’s for yourself or your loved ones. Have a scroll through the photos above to see some of the beautiful artworks and other items available in-store.

Getting to Waterfalls Cafe & Gallery is extremely easy and would have to be one of the most beautiful road trips from Hobart. Simply follow the highway all the way up the Derwent River to Westerway before turning left – the Mt Field Visitor Centre is only 10mins further up the road.

The walk to Russell Falls is a must, but once you’re finished I thoroughly recommend putting aside a half hour or more to explore the wonderful artworks, photography, and other handicrafts at the Gallery – more than 80% of the artists and creators represented are locals! 🎨📸

They like to keep a low profile, but I also love how Rachel and the team at Waterfalls Cafe and Gallery do such amazing work behind the scenes in providing training and upskilling for their team (all of whom are locals from the area as well). They are a real credit to their community 😊

Every time I go for a bushwalk up at Mt Field I always make sure I stop by the cafe for a browse or a hot coffee, and I’m sure you will love Waterfalls Cafe and Gallery as much as I do!

Note: Because the Cafe is inside the National Park you will need a valid Parks Pass to visit. Don’t worry though, because you can buy one on-site, or online before you arrive in Tasmania 👍

"Rachel, Greg and the team are so welcoming and generous. Whether it’s a coffee or bite to eat, it’s always an absolute pleasure at Waterfalls! Highly recommend this family & their wonderful business."
