Mt Field Retreat

Accommodation | Derwent Valley

A self-drive road trip up the magnificent Derwent valley to Mt Field National Park is an absolute must for every visitor to Tasmania.

Not only is it breath-takingly beautiful, but it is so easy to get there as well.

Fly into Hobart in the morning and pick up your rental car, grab a lazy morning tea in New Norfolk along the way, and by lunch time you will be pulling up at what I feel is one of Australia’s very best natural wonders – Mt Field National Park.

Accommodation options are limited in this stunning part of Tasmania, and yet Mt Field Retreat ticks every single box, and more!

It is an absolute gem, and the perfect place to base yourself, not only for doorstep access to Mt Field NP but also for a day trip out to Maydena, Styx Valley, Lake Pedder, Gordon Dam and the lakeside village of Strathgordon.

There are plenty of reasons why Mt Field Retreat is so good, but for me it comes down to three things – the location, the comfort and quality of the facilities, and most important of all, the friendly approach they take in helping every traveller feel at home.

The location?

You can not get any better.

A relaxing 6-min stroll through the forest and across the bridge is all it takes to get to the Mt Field Visitor centre and Tasmania’s best and easiest short walk to Russell Falls & Horseshoe Falls.

Keep an eye out for platypus along the way!

Horseshoe Falls - Mt Field

Mt Field has so many incredible walking and hiking options for all levels of ability, showcasing the rainforests, waterfalls and alpine tarns of this pristine landscape.

Day-trippers need to keep a close eye on the clock when they visit, but when you stay at Mt Field Retreat you can experience so much more and do it at a very relaxed pace – the perfect approach if you ask me, as I hate feeling rushed when I’m out exploring and taking photos.

Even better… as the sun goes down you can head back into the National Park and see pademelons, quolls, turbo-chooks, and plenty of other endemic Tassie wildlife… but without the crowds!

Special Offer for Lappers!

Lappers receive a complimentary bottle of Tasmanian red wine when you stay 2 or more nights at the relaxing Mt Field Retreat.

King beds are a feature in all of their pods (easily reconfigured to a split twin if needed) and the bright, spacious kitchenettes are full equipped for all your self-catering needs, including a stovetop and dishwasher. Just wait until you see the bathroom views as well!

Accessibility needs are also covered, with some pods including a studio-style layout with a larger kitchen and bathroom, wide access and fully functional bathroom including a wheel-in shower and convenient shower seat.

Of course, being located so close to the alpine regions of Tasmania the instant electric heating will keep you cosy all night long, and the designer chairs are the perfect place to enjoy a hot cup of coffee in the morning as the sun comes up.

What a fantastic little gem you have created. Warm and cosy with everything we needed. From the waterfalls to the glow worms, Mt Field has captured our hearts.

Could you get more welcoming and friendly hosts than Rachel and Greg? I doubt it!

Locals and previous visitors to the region might recognise Rachel as the owner of the wonderful Waterfalls Cafe & Gallery at the Mt Field Visitor centre, and she has translated her warm Tassie-centric approach in such a positive and creative way to Mt Field Retreat.

With Rachel’s artistic eye and Greg’s incredibly evocative photography of the region, together they bring life to the walls of your pod in a uniquely Tasmanian way, and you will find numerous little touches throughout that show you just how much they care about ensuring you enjoy the perfect escape.

Nothing is too much trouble for them, and they go out of their way to help you feel right at home.

For a unique getaway in one of Tasmania’s most beautiful regions, I can’t recommend Mt Field Retreat highly enough.

Don’t forget to mention the Lap of Tasmania or use my LAPOFTAS code to receive your complimentary bottle of Tassie wine as well.
