Tasmania Road Trip Map

A Tasmania road trip map is essential for any traveller wanting to experience their own self-guided driving adventure.

There are many reasons for needing a map of Tasmania, which is why I have provided 3 different ways of ensuring you’ve got the right maps for your Tassie road trip.

  1. Lap of Tasmania Map – I created this map to give you a ‘feel’ for Tasmania, showing you the distances between destinations and popular towns to stay the night.
  2. Tasmania Attractions Map – This interactive Google map shows you dozens of interesting places to see, fun things to do, cosy accommodation, and some of Tasmania’s best places to get a delicious meal.
  3. Paper Map of Tasmania – A paper map is often preferred to a digital map, especially while on the road. I’ve reviewed the options and in my opinion a HEMA map of Tasmania is the best of them all.

Keep reading to learn more about each map and how you might want to use one or more to plan your Tassie road trip itinerary.

Lap of Tasmania Map

Understanding the distances between towns is very important for a road trip in Tasmania.

It might look like two locations are very close to each other, but the mountainous terrain and stunning sights mean you need to allow more time to cover the same distance compared to mainland Australia.

My Lap of Tasmania Map is a good place to get a feel for where things are located, driving distances between locations, and some initial thoughts on how to start planning your road trip itinerary.

My favourite accommodation options for budget, family and luxury travellers

Paper Map of Tasmania

The world has gone digital in so many ways, and mostly for the better.

But when it comes to maps I still find that a paper version still has so many advantages that you will never get with a digital or online map.

  • Batteries not required – When the power goes out or your battery runs flat you’ll always have a paper version available.
  • WiFi coverage – The mountainous terrain of Tasmania means that mobile network coverage is limited outside major cities and towns, and there are many black spots where you get absolutely zero internet access. There are ways of downloading maps for offline use, but having a paper copy is very handy.
  • Track your road trip – I love using textas/sharpies or a fluoro highlighter to track the different road trip routes that we’ve taken, often using different colours for each region or day of travel. Can you do that with a digital map? Not very well, making a paper copy so much more engaging and ‘hands on’.
  • Easy orientation – Whether it’s you or your partner in the passenger seat, being able to rotate your map and quickly scan the island is incredibly useful while on the move – something I find a bit annoying and fiddly on a phone screen.
  • Memories – At the end of your trip, or even years later, you will have a fantastic memento of your Tassie holiday that is full of character and memories.

There are a few different options available to you, but the best one I’ve come across is the range of maps from HEMA. They are regularly updated and in addition to their main Tasmania map they also provide a lot of helpful information for planning your journey.

Key features of the Tasmania HEMA map:

  • Campsites and caravan parks
  • National parks
  • Fuel locations
  • Detailed maps of Lake St Clair and Franklin-Gordon Rivers National Park, Freycinet National Park, Southwest National Park and the Hobart Region
  • Complete list of Tasmanian Visitor Information Centres
  • Table showing Tasmania’s National Parks and Reserves with key features and facilities
  • Summary of the key things to see in Tasmania broken up by region

It’s a great option that I’m sure you will find very helpful both in the planning stages, and while on the road.

I hope you’ve found these maps helpful in planning your holiday in Tasmania.
