The Grand on Macfie

Accommodation | Devonport

The seaside city of Devonport is one of the most popular places to start a Lap of Tasmania.

Why?

Because this is where the Spirit of Tasmania ferry arrives from Victoria!

I’ve spoken with a lot of road trippers as they come to the end of their time in Tasmania, and I keep hearing one thing, “I wish I spent more time in Devonport!”

It is a fantastic little city, nestled between the the banks of the Mersey River to the east, the Don River to the west, and the iconic Bass Strait to the north. The place has a real buzz about it these days, with some awesome little cafes and restaurants to complement the history of the city, and the numerous activities on offer nearby.

I thoroughly recommend at least one night – two would be even better – and the best place to stay is The Grand on Macfie!

Just a 5-minute walk from central Devonport, staying a night or two at this heritage bed and breakfast is like stepping back in time.

Built in 1899, this beautiful Victorian-era property evokes a sense of restraint, antiquity and sensibility that is all too rare in the hustle and bustle of today’s modern life.

Your hosts, Paul and Brenden, have a real passion for this era in Tasmanian history and you can see their deft touch throughout.

Chaise lounges, antique four-poster beds (including a stunning Parisian-style sleigh bed!), hardwood dressing tables, bay windows and luxuriously rich carpets underfoot are just some of the delights you will discover in each of the beautifully appointed king and queen suites.

It isn’t just the rooms either. The first-floor balcony is the perfect location for a glass of bubbles as you soak up the city, river and ocean views.

Are you looking for a truly decadent experience? Pencil in a Saturday or Sunday afternoon high tea in the Grand Dining Room!

As a keen foodie I love a high tea, and this would have to be one of the best in Tasmania. We are talking Royal Doulton fine china, a delicious selection of house-made delicacies, pastries and sandwiches, drawing on the fresh, seasonal ingredients from the local area wherever possible, and bottomless cups of tea and coffee.

At the time of writing, high teas are scheduled to recommence at The Grand on Macfie from mid-February 2022. Get in touch closer to the date to confirm because it is an unmissable treat!
