If it’s hidden gems and ‘under the radar’ places you want to experience on your Tassie holiday, then look no further than the magnificent Derwent Valley!
Located just a short drive from bustling Hobart, this gorgeous region is perfect for a day trip jam-packed full of gourmet food, stunning wines and whiskies, jaw-dropping natural beauty, and some of the friendliest locals you’ll find anywhere on the island 😊
Wondering how to make this happen?
You won’t find any better than an immersive tour led by Sam from The Derwent Experience!
The first time I met Sam I couldn’t help but be swept up in his passion and enthusiasm for all things Derwent Valley.
Once you visit you will quickly see why!
With the sparkling River Derwent dancing by your side, every bend in the road brings new opportunities to taste delicious treats, to sip on some of the world’s best beverages, and to immerse yourself in some of Tasmania’s most beautiful landscapes.
From the sparkling and pinot-friendly wineries of Granton, to the world-acclaimed paddock-to-plate experience of Agrarian Kitchen in New Norfolk, to the velvety smooth whiskies and refreshing gins lovingly created at Lawrenny, Derwent and New Norfolk distilleries… a tour of the Derwent Valley is your ultimate taste of Tasmania.

There are a variety of different tours available with The Derwent Experience – some taking you into Hobart or as far afield as Cradle Mountain – but the one I feel sums up this idyllic location best of all is their incredible ‘Drink Derwent Valley‘ tour.
Unlike many other tours, Sam likes to provide his guests with as much choice as possible – it’s your day out after all!
As the seasons change there will particular venues that are recommended, but ultimately it is up to you and your taste buds. If you prefer gin over whisky, that’s totally ok. Or, maybe you want to make it all about the cool-climate wines? Not a problem! Lunch at a friendly country pub is also an option 😋
On the road, Sam is a wealth of local knowledge, while at every venue you will be met by either the Makers themselves or their wonderful staff and taken on a journey of exploration – learning about the history, the science, and the passion behind their creations.
"Sam was an amazing tour guide with lots of history and information on the area! 4 different venues, all run by local families and by real people, great choices - especially loved the gins and vino. We went in Autumn and the colours were beautiful. The whole day was so easy - thanks Sam would definitely book again!"

Another great thing about The Derwent Experience is that there is absolutely no pressure whatsoever to purchase bottles or other products. Of course, if you find something you love then why wouldn’t you take a souvenir back home? But other than that it is a no-stress, no-pressure tour that is all too rare these days.
You will be very pleased to hear that pick-ups are available all across Hobart city as well, and Sam even has some handy tips on all-day parking if you need it.
He always goes the extra step for all his customers, so if you need to adjust a tour, create a totally bespoke experience, or would simply prefer to talk things through before booking, please don’t hesitate to give him a call. However you decide to design your day, and whether you book online or over the phone, my LAPOFTAS code remains valid for 10% OFF all tours with The Derwent Experience 😊
I absolutely love what The Derwent Experience is doing to showcase this magical region of Tasmania to visitors just like you, and I can’t recommend their tours highly enough.
